Discrimination Laws

Since the 1960s a series of anti-discrimination laws have been enacted. The major one has been the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as amended in 1972 and 1991. Title VII of that Act covers employment. Employers are not allowed to discriminate against employees in regard to compensation and benefits on the basis of race, religion, sex, national origin, age, or physical or mental disability.

In addition to Title VII, the following statutes provide protection to employees:

· Age Discrimination Act;
· Age Discrimination in Employment Act;
· Americans with Disabilities Act;
· Civil Rights Act of 1866, Section 1981;
· Civil Rights Act of 1871, Section 1983;
· Civil Rights Act of 1968, Title I;
· Civil Rights Act of 1991;
· Education Amendments of 1972;
· Equal Pay Act;
· Immigration Reform and Control Act;
· Job Training Partnership Act;
· Older Workers Benefit Protection Act;
· Pregnancy Discrimination Act;
· Rehabilitation Act; and
· Vietnam Era Veterans' Readjustment Assistance Act.
