Traditionally, compensation and benefits competitive norms have been the province of corporate analysts, consultants, and managers. Technology has brought this knowledge to the general populace. The cost of labor is typically the largest single expense category of most clients. On a macro level, these expenditures are important because of their impact on profits. On a micro level, these expenditures contribute to the attraction, retention, motivation, and engagement of employees. While it could be argued that in the past, little had changed regarding pay practices, technology has destroyed the status quo. Today, most employees have a fair idea of what their job is worth (oftentimes a far better idea than their management who have only a few minutes to research any one job). They may also know what the benefit plans are at competitive businesses. Business professionals are being asked to deal with questions that were not visible to most in the past. This course is intended to allow a professional, to address these issues in a meaningful way. A lack of understanding of the economic, sociological, organizational, and now technical conditions influencing compensation and benefit practices can severely affect management of an organization. The knowledge you can gain in this course will provide you with a clear understanding of the labor environment and related issues in compensation and benefits management.
